In January 2018, the Permanent Peoples Tribunal (PPT) was asked to issue an advisory opinion on fracking and other unconventional oil and gas extraction techniques and climate change, in relation to their impact on the rights of affected populations and the rights of nature. The request, formulated and signed by numerous qualified representatives of academic groups and community organizations, is the result of a long investigation conducted over two years in accordance with the terms of reference of the PPT Statute. The session was held via a virtual platform (Zoom) from May 14 to 18, 2018, and concluded with a preliminary statement by the PPT panel of judges.
