The final hearing of the PPT session dedicated to violations of the human, environmental and territorial rights of the traditional peoples and peoples of the Cerrado will be held in the city of Goiania, Brazil, from 8 to 10 July 2022, at the Dom Fernando Pastoral Centre. The PPT jury will present its decision at a press conference scheduled for 11 July at the Noble Hall of the Law Faculty of the Federal University of Goiás (see the schedule of the hearing and press conference here).
The Cerrado Session was inaugurated on 10 September 2021 in response to the request made by the National Campaign in Defence of the Cerrado, an articulation of 50 realities between indigenous movements, quilombolas, traditional Cerrado communities and Via Campesina movements. For the terms indicated in the indictment, three thematic public hearings have been scheduled dedicated to the theme of water (30/11-01/12/2021), food sovereignty and socio-biodiversity (15-16/03/2022) and land and territory (08-10/06/2022), which is considered final and deliberative.
The panel of judges of the PPT includes representative personalities, recognised at national and international level, belonging to several disciplines and with different competences, in order to meet the requirements set out in the statutes of the PPT and consistent with the contents and objectives of this session. In addition to the President of the PPT, Philippe Texier, Honorary Judge of the French Court of Cassation, the other members of this panel are: Antoni Pigrau Solé, Professor of International Law at the Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona, Spain; Deborah Duprat, jurist and former Deputy Attorney General of the Republic of Brazil; Monsignor José Valdeci, Bishop of the Diocese of Brejo, Brazil; Eliane Brum, Brazilian journalist; Enrique Leff, Mexican economist, sociologist and environmental philosopher; Luiz Eloy Terena, indigenous jurist and member of the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB), Brazil; Rosa Acevedo Marín, Venezuelan sociologist and lecturer at the Federal University of Pará; Silvia Ribeiro, Uruguayan journalist and researcher at the ETC Group; and Teresa Almeida Cravo, lecturer in International Relations at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. For the general secretariat of the PPT, Gianni Tognoni and Simona Fraudatario were in charge of accompanying and guiding the process based on the competences and functions of the Tribunal.
