The Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal (PPT) examined, during the year 2022, the dramatic consequences of the policy of Mr Jair Bolsonaro’s government on the fundamental rights of the Brazilian people. In two sessions, one on the Cerrado (Session on the Defence of the Cerrado Territories, 2021-2022) and the other on the management of the Covid 19 pandemic (Pandemic and authoritarianism. The responsibility of the Bolsonaro government for the systematic violations of the Brazilian people’s fundamental rights perpetrated by the policies imposed in the framework of the Covid-19 pandemic) was conducted by examining numerous documents and hearing from many witnesses. The result of these rigorous examinations was that Mr. Bolsonaro was personally responsible for acts qualified as crimes against humanity and genocidal intent against indigenous populations. It is therefore imperative that these acts do not go unpunished. The peoples of Brazil have a right to truth, justice and reparation.
The serious attacks on democratic institutions in Brasilia in recent days confirm the urgent need to adopt measures to guarantee the peoples of Brazil the recognition and exercise of their rights.
