46. The violations of international law and international humanitarian law by the Turkish Republic and its officials against the Kurdish people and their organizations (Paris, 15-16 March 2018)

The session of the Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal (PPT) on Turkey and the Kurdish people was held in Paris on 15 and 16 March 2018. This followed a request from several associations who had appealed to the PPT to launch an investigation into violations of the fundamental human rights of the Kurdish people, which they attributed to the Turkish government.

On 24 May 2018, the Tribunal’s jury announced the Judgement at the European Parliament, finding Turkey responsible for denying the Kurdish people’s right to self-determination, imposing Turkish identity, erasing the identity and presence of the Kurdish people, and suppressing their participation in the country’s political, economic, and cultural life.

The Turkish State and its senior officials were specifically found to be responsible for war crimes in Kurdish southeastern Anatolia, including massacres and the permanent displacement of Kurds. They were also found to be responsible for State crimes such as targeted killings, extrajudicial executions and enforced disappearances, which were committed by various branches of the Turkish State’s security forces and intelligence services in Turkey and abroad, particularly in France.
